Algeria-France: Significant progress in cooperation projects

ALGIERS- Minister of Industrial Development and Investment Promotion Amara Benyounes and French President’s Special envoy for Algerian-French cooperation Jean-Pierre Raffarin hailed the significant progress made in all bilateral economic projects.

"All economic and industrial cooperation projects are progressing well, and all the problems related to the projects have been solved now," Benyounes told the press at the end of a working session with Raffarin.

The launch of the building work of Renault car manufacturing plant in Oran and the laying of the foundation stone of the SANOFI new plant last September in Sidi Abdallah were the main examples cited by the minister for this "significant progress."

Benyounes also underlined the need to further enhance industrial cooperation with France by exploring new partnership opportunities. "We will examine new opportunities of industrial partnership," he said.

"The visit of French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault to Algeria, scheduled for December, will be an opportunity to give new impulse to industrial cooperation," said Benyounes.

Fro his part, Raffarin said to be satisfied with "the progress made in major cooperation projects," adding that this progress "is commensurate with the expectations of the two countries."

"I’m satisfied with the progress made so far, but our Prime ministers are still very demanding," he said.

The French envoy also mentioned the partnership project between the Algerian cement industrial group GICA and the French group Lafarge to develop the Algerian cement industry.

According to him, a road map is under development to identify new cooperation areas between the two countries in the sectors of housing, health, food-processing and port infrastructures.

The roadmap is due to be submitted on the occasion of the forthcoming visit of the French Prime minister to Algeria in December, said Raffarin.

"The two governments seek to boost cooperation and we should act quickly to achieve this objective," underlined Raffarin.

The French President’s envoy arrived Wednesday in Algiers for a two-day visit in order to enhance partnership between the two countries.

The French envoy was received Thursday by Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal.
