Mechanical engineering industry: National subcontractors urged to improve competitiveness

ALGIERS- Minister of Industry, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Investment Promotion Cherif Rahmani urged Tuesday here national subcontractors to improve their competitiveness so as to develop the mechanical engineering industry in Algeria, reaffirming State’s readiness to support them.

Subcontracting firms "must modernize their production tools, achieve progressively international standards to enter international markets and train their employees in order to develop industrial subcontracting in Algeria," Rahmani said during a national meeting on industrial subcontracting.

"The State decided to support SMEs through a master plan for the development of the activity and the automobile industry in Algeria," he added.

In addition to the forthcoming creation of a national consultative council to organize the field, a new law on subcontracting is under preparation, the minister announced.

The support of professional organizations operating in automobile industry and the granting of lands for this activity are also among the measures that will be taken by the state for the promotion of subcontracting.

The minister also urged the National Agency for SME Development to set up a fund to finance the upgrading of the field.
